Health and social care have seen major advances in every aspect of software and hardware used in every dimension of learning and practice – from the digitization of patient records, computerization of human resource planning to sophisticated instrumentation used in diagnosis and treatment of complex health issues. The lightspeed development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and machine learning are not only spreading across diagnosis and treatment but also having an increasing impact on teaching and learning in health and social care. Simulation is now a major part of all health and social care curricula, and AI is supporting new thinking about assessment and evaluation – of both learners and programmes. As yet, virtual reality and augmented reality are in their infancy in educational programmes although it is already clear that they are already occasioning radical thinking about their future role in clinical training and patient care. As these major technologically enhanced changes move forward in education, practice and care, new styles of leaders and leadership will be necessary to address the enormous challenges that develop. The 5th ICON IPECP is an excellent forum in which to engage in dialogue and debate around these hugely important matters.\n\nJohn H.V.
