In Malaysia, a stem cell transplant is carried out for patients suffering from Leukaemia or Thalassemia. Other than that, other blood diseases including Lymphoma, Aplastic Anaemia, Immunodeficiency and many more may also benefit from stem cell transplants.\n\nPatients who require blood stem cell treatment sometimes don’t have a family member with a suitable blood stem cell. In these cases, they are compelled to search for an unrelated compatible donor.\n\n### What is Blood Stem Cell?\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Line-Pink-1024x11.jpg)\n\nBlood is made up of various different kinds of cells: red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. All the different kinds of blood cell start out as a cell called a ‘stem cell’. Blood stem cells are formed in the bone marrow and then receive chemical signals that tell them which kind of blood cell to become before entering the blood stream. Blood stem cells can be obtained from peripheral blood, bone marrow and cord blood. \n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Blood-Stem-cell.png)\n\n### Who need blood stem cell transplant?\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Line-Pink-1024x11.jpg)\n\nPatient who has blood disease such as:\n\n* Leukaemia\n* Lymphoma\n* Anaemia\n* Thalassemia\n* Others\n\n### Who can register as blood stem cell donor?\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Line-Pink-1024x11.jpg)\n\n* Age between 18 - 50 years old\n* Malaysian\n* Healthy from any blood disease\n\n### How to register as a blood stem cell donor?\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/white-line-768x8.jpg)\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/step-1-1024x927.png)\n\n### Blood Stem Cell Collection Procedure (Apheresis Method)\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Line-Pink-1024x11.jpg)\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/MSCR.gif)\n\nOther blood components without stem cells flow out from the machine and enter another arm\n\nBlood flow out from arm and enter the machine\n\nBlood stem cells collected by the machine through the process\n\n### How will i be selected as a donor?\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Line-Pink-1024x11.jpg)\n\nYou will be determined as a suitable donor by undergoing a special laboratory test which requires a sample of blood to be taken. During the test, we will be looking for proteins on the surface of white blood cells called Human Leucocyte Antigens (HLA). \n\nYou will be selected as a donor if your blood HLA matches with the blood HLA of a patient.\n\n### Who can register as blood stem cell donor?\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Line-Pink-1024x11.jpg)\n\n* Age between 18 - 50 years old\n* Malaysian\n* Healthy from any blood disease\n\n#### Walk In\n\nYou can make appointment to walk in to our office located at:\n\nInstitute for Medical Research (IMR), \nAllergy and Immunology Research Centre, \nBlock C, Level 1, National Institutes of Health, \nNo. 1, Jalan Setia Murni, Seksyen U13/52, Bandar Setia Alam \n40170, Shah Alam, Selangor\n\n#### Online\n\nWe will explain about MSCR to you by online and send registration kit straight to your house\n\n#### Campaign\n\nInvite us to give a talk or opening booth in your event\n\n### Collaboration\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Line-Pink-768x8.jpg)\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/KKM-300x226.jpg)\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/NIH-300x226.jpg)\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/IMR-300x226.jpg)\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Pusat-Darah-Negara-300x226.jpg)\n\n![](https://mscr.makna.org.my/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/MAKNA-300x226.jpg)\n\n* Institute for Medical Reseach (IMR), \n Allergy and Immunology Research Centre, \n Block C, Level 1, National Institutes of Health, \n No. 1, Jalan Setia Murni, Seksyen U13/52, \n Bandar Setia Alam, \n 40170, Shah Alam, Selangor.\n\n* +603 - 3362 8384\n\n* [mscr@moh.gov.my](mailto:mscr@moh.gov.my)\n\nMalaysian Stem Cell Registry .
